Did You Know?

              By Rick Keller

Karting as we know it started in California in 1956. The two men who are credited with building the first Karts were Art Ingles and Lou Borelli. The original engines were WW2 surplus. The first was a 2 cycle Westbend 750. After building one, they decided to build a second. As racers we all know what happened next. That was the start of Kart Racing.

Not long after, Karting spread across the country. By the late 50’s, organized kart racing reached Long Island. The venue where they raced was at Asharoken Beach in Northport. In attendance at these races was a current member and racer at LIKA.

In the next episode of “Did You Know”, we will continue with the early history of Karting and the answer to who in our club raced at Asharoken Beach.

This page has been created so we may display the history of LIKA and that of Karting. We would appreciate any old photos, article, etc. that can be posted here.
